NRMA Insurance told The Money Edition it became aware of the problem in late April this year after a customer’s legal representative flagged that the statutory indexation had not been correctly applied to weekly benefit payments that continued for more than 78 weeks after an accident.

The insurer found an error in how it applied indexation in its system and apologised to the customer, along with a remediation payment.

A further review of the NRMA Insurance database found approximately 400 customers whose payments were affected by the same issue between October 2019 and June 2026.

The average payment shortfall, which customers will receive back plus interest, amounted to $940.

A spokesperson for NRMA Insurance apologised to the affected customers and said the business had notified the regulator.

“We sincerely apologise and have made remediation payments, plus interest, to the impacted customers owed a direct shortfall,” the spokesperson said.

“We recently identified a further cohort of customers who previously settled their common law claims.

“NRMA Insurance is working to issue one-off interest payment on the underpaid amounts to compensate these customers for the period in which those funds were unavailable to them.
