A gunman attempted to shoot a man who was parked near a Sydney school during pick-up while his 15-year-old daughter was in the car.

The incident happened in Fairfield, western Sydney, as the 44-year-old man was parked in a driveway while collecting his teen daughter on Tuesday.

The gunman reportedly aimed his handgun at the father who was sitting in his ute.

Police are investigating whether the weapon became jammed, giving the intended target an opportunity to make a run for it.

CCTV shows the victim in a high-vis shirt — who is believed to be an innocent party — and his daughter fleeing down a suburban street.

The gunman also made his escape and remains on the run.

NSW Police rushed to the school at 3pm after reports of an attacker dressed entirely in black.

Multiple media reports say the intended target had no crime links but was an innocent relative of senior underworld figures.

“Both were distressed but not physically injured,” said a NSW Police spokesperson.

“The only description provided of the man with the gun was that he was dressed in black, wearing a black balaclava.”

The Telegraph reports that detectives are investigating if the incident is linked to conflict between the Alameddines and Coconut Cartel.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports there was a heavy police presence around the school on Wednesday afternoon.

Multiple high-powered Highway Patrol units, general duties officers and police on motorbikes went up and down the road outside the front gates between 3pm and 4pm.

A police helicopter was flying overhead.

However, parents told the newspaper they were unaware of the previous day’s apparent gangland attack.

“I had no idea about that,” Giulio Buda said as he collected his year 7 son, Domenico.

“It’s a bit scary … a bit concerning,” he told the masthead.
