What started as a routine rental inspection has sparked a broader debate about patriotism, symbolism and tenants’ rights.

Breeanah O’Brien said she was asked to remove the Australian flag displayed at her Sydney rental property because the owner considered it a potential “target” or “threat” to the home.

The Bligh Park resident says she initially complied, before questioning whether the request was lawful.

The incident has reignited discussion about how the national flag is perceived, with some arguing it has increasingly been associated with far-right groups despite remaining a symbol of pride for many Australians.

Extremism expert Josh Roose said a “small tiny minority” have attempted to claim the flag for their own purposes, but insists Australians should still feel entitled to fly it.

Tenant advocates say there is nothing in New South Wales tenancy laws preventing renters from displaying the Australian flag at a stand-alone property, provided no damage is caused.
