Today show co-host Sarah Abo has announced her departure just months after Karl Stefanovic was sacked, with their replacements reportedly to be announced on Thursday.

The 39-year-old journalist issued a statement on Wednesday revealing she would not be returning to the chair after her maternity leave, and hinted at “more to come”.

The Daily Telegraph reported on Thursday that Abo had been “dumped” while absent on maternity leave, with Nine executives telling her they would not renew her contract after she rejected alternative roles, including news reading in Melbourne.

Speculation is rife over who will take over at the Today show, with The Telegraph naming Queenslander Sylvia Jeffreys and Tom Steinfort.

The outlet said Jeffreys would be announced as Abo’s successor at a 2027 programming event on Thursday, with Tom Steinfort to replace Stefanovic.

Abo has been a permanent co-host on Today since 2023 and joined the Nine Network as a reporter for 60 Minutes in 2019.

She has been on maternity leave after giving birth to her first child, Sonny, in July.

On Wednesday, Abo praised her “family” at Nine and thanked viewers.

“Together with 60 Minutes, I’ve spent my time at Nine chasing stories, travelling and reporting from all over the world, interviewing some incredible and inspiring people from all walks of life,” the host said.

“Becoming a mum has heralded a new chapter and sharing that with our audience has been truly special. As many of you know, this has been a significant journey for my family and will continue to be my greatest achievement.”

Abo thanked viewers for “letting me into your homes to be part of your morning routine”.

“Without you, there is no Today show,” she said.

“I’d like to thank the wider Today team – the amazing crew, incredible producers and my wonderful fellow hosts – you all know how much you mean to me.

“It takes a special kind of crazy to wake up at the hours we do but it’s so much easier when the team feels like family. I’ll miss you all dearly.”

In an Instagram post while her baby was asleep, Abo said “there is more to come” but she would reveal that later.

Stefanovic was sacked in June after interviewing far-right British figure Tommy Robinson on his podcast.

The short-lived podcast has been on hiatus since August 24.

This week the joint owner of podcast company 123 Podcast, Keshnee Ibrahim, 36, filed an urgent application for the court to defer a meeting scheduled for Friday, fearing she would be removed as a director of the company.

Both she and Stefanovic own 45-per-cent stakes in the company that oversees The Karl Stefanovic Show.

Stefanovic’s lawyer told the court on Tuesday the former TV host had agreed not to go ahead with Friday’s meeting and wanted the court to decide the issue of a buyout, as early as next week.

Stefanovic agreed there had been an “irreconcilable breakdown” in the relationship and that a buyout of the shares was appropriate, lawyer Samuel Murray told the court.

But he disagreed that the company was run in a way that was oppressive of Ibrahim’s interests, as she alleges.
