Bindi and Robert Irwin have shared touching tributes to their father Steve, the famous “Crocodile Hunter” – including the heartwarming way Bindi keeps his memory alive for her own daughter.

Steve Irwin died 20 years ago on Friday, after he was struck by a stingray barb in the waters off Port Douglas.

Bindi was just eight years old at the time. In a moving tribute posted to social media on Friday, she revealed the grief has “never truly left us”.

“Twenty years ago, today, the world lost the most passionate and dedicated wildlife conservationist,” the now 28-year-old wrote alongside a video of her dad.

“Our family lost our superhero. My mum lost the love of her life; my brother and I lost the greatest dad.

“Grief never truly leaves us; we walk alongside it every day. Where there is enormous grief, there is even greater love.”

She went on to reveal what it was like to lose not just a dad, but one of the country’s most beloved personalities.

“In the last 20 years, I have watched the world mourn my dad with our family. I always thought that my dad’s legacy is wildlife conservation; it turns out, his legacy is love,” she wrote.

Irwin also said her daughter, Grace Warrior, “watches his documentaries every morning”.

“She feels utterly loved by her ‘grandpa crocodile’ without ever having met him,” she said.

Irwin’s younger brother Robert also marked Friday’s sad milestone. The rising TV star was just two years old when his famous father died.

“Your legacy is forever,” he posted to Instagram on Friday, along with a photo of baby Robert with the Crocodile Hunter.

One of the first replies came from Bindi.

“Always with us,” she added to her brother’s post, accompanied by a heart emoji.

The siblings’ mother Terri Irwin also responded to Bindi’s tribute, writing “your dad loves you so very much” on the post.

The Australia Zoo official page posted: “The greatest Wildlife Warrior will always live on through his legacy and your family”.
