Jamie Foxx is expected to finally reveal details of the illness that left him in a coma when his comedy special is released on Netflix today.

Foxx’s special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was premieres in Australia on Tuesday and is billed as a “heartfelt return” in which he “sets the record straight” and “expresses deep gratitude to those who prayed and supported his recovery, turning his show into a thank you to his fans.”

The Django star reportedly spent weeks in hospital and longer in recovery last year after with a mystery “medical complication”.

The 56-year-old released an undated video on social media in July in which he said he had a “bad headache” on April 11, 2023, and “asked my boy for an Advil”, before snapping his fingers. Then “I was gone for 20 days”.

At the filming of his Netflix spacial in October, Foxx told the  audience he had a “near-death experience” and was in a weeks-long coma.

Two fans who attended the show’s taping told CNN that Foxx performed a one-man-show in which he revealed his diagnosis and discussed his recovery.

Netflix has not revealed what parts of Foxx’s show will make the final cut of the special

Demecos Chambers, a long-time fan of Foxx who attended the standup taping, was quoted by CNN as saying Foxx said he thought he just passed out for a second, but it was two or three weeks.

“He was in a stone-cold coma,” Chambers said.

He said Foxx told the audience that he was unconscious for so long that when he woke up in the hospital, he had grown a beard.

Audience members had to seal their phones in pouches during the performance but were not asked to sign any non-disclosure agreements.

Chambers said Foxx did not hold back when revealing his hospitalisation after passing out on-set in Atlanta, where he was in production on his upcoming film Back in Action with Cameron Diaz.

He reportedly said that “if he didn’t get to the hospital in that moment and the nurse didn’t treat him in a certain timeframe, he said he would have died”, said Chambers, who added that the star expressed that he was “literally within an inch of his life. He was gone. It was lights out”.

Foxx told the audience at the taping that he credited his family with keeping him alive, saying that one of his daughters was playing the guitar next to his hospital bed when he finally woke up from his coma, Chambers told CNN.

While Chambers said Foxx appeared in good health at the October taping, “you can tell that he’s recovering from a serious health issue – he’s more conscious of how he moves”.
