After a seven-year battle, The Castle house’s future has finally been decided
George Fendyk bought the famous house for $40,000 in 2017.
It’s the house that inspired much-loved Australian film The Castle and its real story has been just as dramatic.
George Fendyk bought the weatherboard property near Melbourne Airport for $40,000 in 2017, before moving it almost 300 kilometres to Beechworth.
What followed was a seven-year, $140,000 legal battle over its future which included a rejected plan, a messy land title issue, and years of the house sitting empty while locals wondered what would become of it.
Now, approval has finally come through for it to be restored as a habitable family home – but it hasn’t been a total fairytale, with Fendyk’s company also being fined over unrelated illegal works on the site.
