Actor and comedian Adam Sandler officiated while Sir Paul McCartney broke a 60-year drought, singing a Beatles hit, at “America’s royal wedding”.

They are among the few details emerging after singer Taylor Swift and American football legend Travis Kelce tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in New York on Friday.

“Taylor & Travis did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen. Instead, her brother Austin Swift served as Taylor’s Man of Honor and Jason Kelce was Travis’ Best Man. The ceremony joined both families together and was officiated by friend Adam Sandler,” Swift’s publicist said on Saturday.

Kelce’s coach at the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid, said Sandler did a great job.

“He said, ‘kiss every chance you have, every day. Whether you’re going to bed or going to work or, you know, wherever, go ahead and kiss her’. And I thought that was, in a simple way, in its simplest form, it really was touching,” Reid said.

Sandler’s role in the ceremony at Madison Square Gardens might come as a surprise.

But the star, who is best known for his leading roles in movies such as Uncut Gems and 50 First Dates, has long-standing connections to both bride and groom. Last year, he worked with Kelce on the set of Happy Gilmore 2, and he has been open about his admiration for Swift for years.

TMZ reported Swift walked down the aisle to a string rendition of one of her own songs and flowers scattered by Jason and Kylie Kelce’s daughters, Travis’ nieces.

Bride and groom both wore Christian Dior Haute Couture, with shoes custom-made by Christian Louboutin. Swift wore Cartier jewellery.

The marriage, which had been preceded by weeks of rumours and scant details, was announced on the big screens at Madison Square Garden in New York City in a message that read: “JUST&T MARRIED!” in reference to Travis and Taylor.

“They cried, and they laughed, and they danced, and they hugged, and they kissed,” Swift’s aunt Robin Gentry told LBC News

But the couple are yet to release any further details – and certainly no photographs. All of the approximately 1000 guests are believed to be under instructions not to give away details or photos.

“I really can’t say a heck of a lot except it was magical, man, magical,” Kelce’s 74-year-old mother Donna in an interview posted to Instagram on Sunday.

Also among the guests was a long list of celebrities, including Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Grant, Brad Pitt and Selena Gomez. Actress Jessica Alba shared a photo of her outfit for the big day in a story on her Instagram account.

“We love love,” she wrote, along with a selfie of herself in a slinky black Prada gown. “Congrats to T&T – such a beautiful night celebrating you.”

BBC Radio DJ and British TV breakfast show host Greg James, whom Swift invited to the wedding live on air, also confirmed he was there, posting on Instagram on Saturday: “Just&t to say: True to her word, of course the invitation arrived and of course I couldn’t tell anyone.

“Oh my god, what an unbelievably brilliant night.”

He followed it up on Sunday: “I am currently experiencing the world’s greatest hangover and unable to reply to the hilarious number of messages I have received over the last 24 hours.”

After the ceremony, guests were reportedly escorted to the main floor of Madison Square Garden, where the decor was described as “Alice in Wonderland meets Wizard of Oz“.

That’s when McCartney got his time to shine. People magazine reports the 84-year-old former Beatle broke out I Want to Hold Your Hand for the first time in 60 years.

The song was the Beatles’ first US No.1, and they last performed it in September 1964 at the Paramount theatre in New York. McCartney has never performed it in public since.

Stevie Nicks, who sang with Swift at the 2010 Grammy Awards, also performed, although her choice of song has not yet been revealed.

In a since-deleted post on X, AMC chief executive Adam Aron revealed the venue’s walls were adorned with childhood photos of Swift and Kelce, that Kelce wore “a white tux” and Swift “a stunning white wedding dress with a long, veiled train”.

“Immediately upon entry, everything … floors, walls, ceilings … was draped in peach and white. Large blown-up pictures of Taylor and Travis at each age, year by year from one-year-old to late teenager-hood, were on display,” Aron wrote in the post, confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

“A small portion of MSG was cordoned off, devoid of any notion that a basketball or hockey game ever shared that space. Somehow magically, someone created an outdoor garden at a lush countryside retreat. Everything draped off this time in green and white. Real flowers and I think artificial trees welcomed 15 rows of maybe 75 or so chairs. They say there were around 1000 attendees, but surprisingly, it all felt intimate and small. Everything was close.”

The festivities reportedly lasted until 4am.

“[It was] as intimate as it could possibly be given it was Madison Square Garden. Really this garden inside the garden, just so beautiful. It’s hard to imagine a place that big and a wedding with such stars could feel so personal and so intimate,” Good Morning America‘s George Stephanopoulos, who was among the guests, said.
