Elle Macpherson’s accent is again raising eyebrows, after the Australian supermodel appeared in a new video sounding a long way from her Sydney roots.

The 62-year-old was promoting her collaboration with luxury knitwear label Linnea Lund, speaking in French throughout the clip.

In the short clip, Macpherson explains why she wanted to work with the label and its French-Swedish designer Charlotte Bjorklund.

“I really wanted to do this collaboration with Charlotte because A, the quality, B, I love her, C, I love female founders,” she said in the video, which has English subtitles.

“Also, I wanted to do something she didn’t have, that I wanted for myself.”

But rather than the new collection or her language skills, it is Macpherson’s accent that has quickly become the focus in the comments.

“What is with the accent?!?!? Really?” one person wrote.

“What’s with the French accent? She has an Aussie accent usually,” another asked.

Others were so surprised by Macpherson’s voice they questioned whether it had been altered using artificial intelligence.

“What is the voice over? Is that AI. Not great,” one person wrote.

“Oh dear, your voice has been altered by AI 🙁 I love your actual voice,” said another.

Others were more direct.

“Ummm you’re Australian,” one wrote, while another asked: “What accent is this? Weird.”

“Translate in Australian,” said another.

While the pile-on caught Macpherson’s attention, she seemed unperturbed, responding to one of the remarks with: “old french language” and a shrug emoji.

Accent scrutinised

It’s not the first time Macpherson’s accent has attracted attention.

Born and raised in Sydney, Macpherson shot to international fame in the 1980s and has spent much of her adult life overseas.

She has lived for extended periods in New York and London, travelled and worked throughout Europe and has since made the US home.

More than two decades ago, Vanity Fair described Macpherson as speaking with a “Riviera-tinged accent”.

And Macpherson herself has previously spoken about wanting to hold on to her Australian accent.

In 2022, she told Harper’s Bazaar Australia she remained strongly connected to home despite spending much of her life overseas.

“I’m so proud to be Australian and I don’t want to lose my accent,” she said.

A global family

Macpherson has also previously spoken about the very different accents within her own family.

In 2018, she revealed her two sons, Flynn and Aurelius Cy, sounded completely different despite being brothers.

“I do have one son who’s 15 who has a very broad Australian accent and I have the other one who’s 20 has an English accent,” she said.

Flynn was born in New York, while Aurelius was born in London.

Macpherson shares her boys with her former partner, French financier Arpad Busson, with the family spending years between London and New York.
