Three people have been charged in connection with the death of former One Direction member Liam Payne.
The singer died aged 31 after falling from a third-floor balcony of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, last month.
“Illicit conduct was discovered from which three people were charged with the crimes of abandonment of a person followed by death, supply and facilitation of narcotics,” the office of public prosecutor Andrés Madrea said on Thursday (local time).
Madrea’s statement said a companion of Payne’s while he was in Buenos Aires had been charged with abandoning a person following death.
An employee of the upmarket Casa Sur Hotel has been accused of supplying Payne with cocaine twice, while the third person is also accused of supplying drugs to the singer.
Madrea said both had been charged with two counts of supplying narcotics.
Madrea’s office said it had completed a detailed analysis of more than 800 hours of video from security cameras and obtained several dozen testimonies from hotel staff, family members, friends and medical professionals.
According to an autopsy, Payne died from multiple injuries as well as internal and external bleeding caused by the fall.
His body was found in the hotel’s internal courtyard.
Toxicology tests found was under the influence of multiple substances when he died, including “pink cocaine”.
Pink cocaine is a new designer drug originating from Colombia that is typically a powdery mix of ketamine and other illegal substances likely dyed with food colouring.
Drug paraphernalia, including an improvised aluminium pipe, was also found in Payne’s hotel room. Police also found a bottle of alcohol and anti-anxiety medication.
Payne’s body was released to his father, Geoff Payne, last weekend. Geoff Payne flew to Argentina following his son’s death.
