Hollywood star Jason Momoa has made an impassioned plea, joining  Hawaiian natives asking people to not travel to fire-devastated Maui.

The deadliest US blaze in more than 100 years has left at least 93 people dead and the resort town of Lahaina in ruins, while hotels prepare to provide shelter to evacuees.

While thousands need shelter and communities need to time to rebuild, people are being urged to avoid travelling to the region.

Among those who are urging people to not book a holiday is Momoa, who was born in Hawaii and is of native Hawaiian ancestry.

On Instagram. the Aquaman and Game of Thrones actor shared a number of slides which were intially shared by ʻĀina Momona, a community organisation, telling people to cancel their trip if they planned on going to Maui in the near future.

“The devastation from the wildfires will have a lasting, island-wide impact on Maui’s resources,” one of the slides said.

“Our community needs time to heal, grieve and restore. That means the less visitors on the island taking up critical resources that have become extremely limited the better.”

Fires have killed at least 90 people and devastated the city of Lahaina on Hawaii’s Maui island.

How to help Maui

In the Instagram post, ʻĀina Momona shared a number of ways people can help. The first being not to book a hotel stay in Hawaii.

ʻĀina Momona reiterated that survivors are a priority, so potential-tourists should not book a hotel, as displaced people are in need to a roof over their head.

It added that the American Hotel and Lodging Association along with the Hawaii Hotel Alliance are working with hotels in other parts of Hawaii to home displaced residents.

Governor Josh Green said 500 hotels rooms would be made available for locals who have been displaced.

An additional 500 hotel rooms will be set aside for workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

As the death toll around Lahaina climbed to 93, authorities warned the effort to find and identify the dead was still in its early stages.

Both Hawaiian Airlines and Southwest Airlines have lowered their fares so victims and survivors can get off Maui.

People are being asked to not take advantage of the lowered fares unless they are affected by the fires.

There are also several fundraisers people can donate to support the people impacted by the fires.
