Packets of one of the country’s most popular chip brands have been pulled from shelves across Australia amid fears of contamination.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand issued the recall for a range of Smith’s chips on Thursday.

They are:

  • Smith’s Cheese and Onion 45 gram and 170 gram, with a best before date of September 17;
  • Smith’s Original six-pack, with a best before date of September 10;
  • Smith’s Original 19 grams, included in the 20-pack Fun Mix; also with a best before date of September 10.

The Smith’s Cheese & Onion packs were available at Woolworths, Coles and independent and convenience stores in NSW and Queensland.

The Smith’s Original packs were available sold at Woolworths, Coles, IGA, and independent and convenience stores in NSW, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.

FSANZ said the recall was due to “the potential presence of foreign matter (plastic pieces)”.

“Food products containing plastic pieces may cause illness/injury if consumed,” it said.

Consumers are advised not to eat any of the chips. They should contact Smith’s Snackfood Company to arrange a full refund.
