Woolworths is embracing the national nickname for a supermarket roast chook, dropping a real “bachelor’s handbag” that is already making waves online.
The insulated tote bag mimics the look of a real $13 Woolies hot roast chicken in its plastic carry bag.
Woolies said it sold 20 million hot roast chickens a year – making them a staple in households nationwide.
“Aussies have affectionately called hot roast chickens the ‘bachelor’s handbag’ for years. It shows you just how much the product fits into everyday life as the ultimate grab-and-go solution for fast weeknight meals, workday lunches or weekend trips,” the company’s general manager of bags, Rhonda Ma, said on Tuesday.
“We decided it was finally time to make the moniker literal. It’s the ultimate novelty accessory for super fans of the hot roast chook. Fully insulated and built to last, it’s designed for real life – from daily work commutes to weekend beach trips and more.”
The $10 totes feature the signature graphics of Woolies’ hot chicken packaging. They also come with a sturdy handle, adjustable and detachable strap, and thermal insulation to help get hot chooks home or keep lunch cold.

Sydney content creator Adrian Widjy got an early look at the new bags.
“This 100 per cent will be gone quick, so whatever you do hunt this down. Yes, this is Woolies’ iconic country-style roast chicken as an actual bag,” he wrote on Instagram on Monday.
“Coming to store from 14th of October, I’m sure it’ll go crazy. Bring roast chicken as lunch, so it’s roast chicken inception.”
It was certainly a winner with his followers.
“OMG I NEED THAT BAG IMMEDIATELY,” wrote one excited fan among hundreds of comments.
“My emotional support animal … Woolies’ hot chook lol,” wrote another.
There were a few sceptics though, including one commenter who referenced another Aussie icon: “10 bucks, tell ’em they’re dreaming.”
And one who offered the Woolworths marketing team a bit of quiet advice.
“I’m waiting for the mud cake bag myself,” she wrote.
The roast chook bags will be available in “select” Woolworths outlets and online across Australia for $10 – but only, as the company warns “while stocks last”.
