The manufacturer said it is writing to owners of 3,745 F-150 vehicles made between 2023 and 2026 to have them repaired for free.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the fuel tank strap may not have been adequately secured to the frame rail and could detach from the vehicle while driving,” Ford Australia said.

“This could cause fuel to leak and, in the presence of an external ignition source, result in a vehicle fire.

“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.”

The F-150 is one of a number of US-style “pickup trucks” entering the Australian market as buyers gravitate towards larger vehicles.

Wildly popular in the US, the F-150 is considered a “full-size” dual cab ute, being larger and heavier than some of Australia’s best-selling utes, including the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger.

Originally made in the US, the F-150 is then shipped to a warehouse in Melbourne, where it is converted from left-hand drive into right-hand drive, suitable for Australian roads.

Since its launch in Australia, it has been subject to numerous recalls, including software glitches and issues with rear wheel hubs.

Ford says it will contact affected owners by writing, where they can arrange for an inspection and repair free of charge.

Concerned owners can search for their vehicle’s VIN number here or contact Ford Australia’s Customer Relationship Centre on 13 36 73.
