A woman has died after being shot by police during a confrontation in which she allegedly threatened officers while armed with an axe.
South Australian Police went to a property in Gwynne Street, Firle, in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs just before 2am on Thursday.
Police said officers were confronted by an armed woman who allegedly threatened them.
“During the incident, police deployed a Taser, which was ineffective. Police then discharged a firearm, striking the woman,” they said.
Officers immediately provided first aid before paramedics arrived and treated the woman.
“Sadly, the woman died at the scene,” police said.
Detectives, forensic officers and police internal investigators are on the scene and will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Gwynne Street remained closed on Thursday while investigations continue, and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
