The full itinerary for the King and Queen’s first Australian tour as monarchs has been released, revealing where Australians might catch a glimpse of the royals.

The royals will be in Canberra and Sydney on their six-day visit from October 18-23, before heading to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

The King has visited Australia 15 times, but October’s trip will be the first since taking the throne.

Their majesties will take part in a community barbecue, learn about combating Australia’s devastating bushfires and marvel at plants at Canberra’s National Botanic Gardens.

In one special visit close to the King’s heart, he will meet cancer researchers professors Georgina Long and Richard Scolyer, who were named Australians of the Year in 2024 for finding a cure for melanoma.

“The King, who has this year been receiving treatment for cancer … will hear about the work they do to help those affected by melanoma, one of Australia’s most common cancers,” the itinerary released by Buckingham Palace on Tuesday (AEST) said.

The King and his daughter-in-law the Princess of Wales were both diagnosed with undisclosed forms of cancer and had been having chemotherapy.

Catherine revealed in a highly personal video on Tuesday she had completed her treatment and would soon resume public engagements.

The whirlwind royal tour Down Under will kick off with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcoming the King and Queen at Parliament House with a reception of political and community leaders.

Australians who are leading in their field in areas such as sport, arts, culture and health will be on the guest list to the event.

While in Canberra, the royals will lay a wreath at the nearby Australian War Memorial and visit the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander memorial, For Our Country.

On the theme of sustainability, the King will visit the CSIRO, meeting firefighters and learning more about the centre’s work to combat the bushfires that devastate millions of hectares of Australian land each year.

They will tour the National Botanic Gardens, home to the world’s largest living collection of Australian native plants, and will learn about Indigenous plant use.

Their majesties will also hear from staff and volunteers about how climate change is affecting biodiversity.

The Queen will join a discussion on domestic and family violence, with some of those whose lives have been affected by it, and experts who work in the field.

She will also meet representatives of GIVIT, a charity that matches donors with those in need, of which she is patron.

In Sydney, the King and Queen will conduct a fleet review of the Navy.

They will attend a community barbecue, sampling produce from across NSW and experiencing the cultural diversity of Australian communities and meeting local residents, and will visit the Opera House.

There will be a visit to a library by the Queen to meet children who are involved in Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition.

It will be the first trip to Australia by a reigning monarch since 2011, when Queen Elizabeth II travelled to Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Perth.

Albanese said Australians would look forward to welcoming the King and Queen back to Australia.

“The royal visit is an opportunity to showcase the best of Australia, our rich culture, our sense of community, and contributions to science, research and global progress,” he said.

“His Majesty first visited Australia in 1966 and has a strong personal affection for our nation.

“We are delighted that His Majesty is recovering well and has made visiting Australia once again a priority.”
