Socialite Brynne Edelsten will no longer face serious drug trafficking charges, instead indicating she will plead guilty to possession offences.

Edelsten, 43, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court for a brief hearing on Monday morning where her lawyer confirmed the case had been resolved.

The former wife of late businessman and deregistered doctor Geoffrey Edelsten was originally facing nine charges, including one count of trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine.

But barrister Veronika Drago told the court the case had resolved to charges of possessing meth and another illicit substance that metabolises as depressant GHB.

Magistrate Vincenzo Caltabiano adjourned the case to August, when Edelsten is expected to apply to have the case finalised in the Magistrates Court.

The drug trafficking charges had put the case on a track to proceed in the County Court.

Edelsten did not speak during Monday’s brief hearing, only standing when the magistrate extended her bail to her next court date.

Her bail conditions include reporting to police three times a week and surrendering her passport so she cannot travel overseas.

Edelsten, 43, will return to Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 12.

The United States-born socialite was married between 2009 and 2014 to Geoffrey Edelsten, a man 40 years her senior.

Geoffrey Edelsten was a former GP and entrepreneur who was known for saving AFL side the Sydney Swans from extinction in the 1980s.

The controversial figure also spent time in jail in 1990 after soliciting a hitman to assault a former patient, having already been struck off the medical register in 1987 for overservicing patients.

More than 40 creditors chased him down in 2016, five years before his death in 2021, aged 78.
