Watch: Hiker’s cliffhanger, horrific ‘poocano’ and Pesto magic

There are a few near misses in our top videos this week, along with some unspeakable substances we wish had missed.

The Pesto phenomenon continued to claim global attention, and Katy Perry proves she will never become an AFL player.

Take a look out our top videos of the week.

Slip sliding away

A hiker is lucky to be alive after a terrifying slip, then slide down a steep mountainside in China.

Yang Meng, 42, captured the near miss on his camera and sent his experience viral on China’s version of TikTok, Douyin.

“I realised I couldn’t get up at all and was sliding faster and faster,” Meng told CNN.

Meng was using a hand-held camera to record his hike through the Fanzengjian mountains in southern China when he slipped and then slid down a rain-slicked sheer rock face.

A tree painfully stopped his slide and that saved his life.

Life’s a beach

If we ever needed another reason to head to the beach, these coastal kangaroos have given us one.

TikTok user @sazzletoc this week posted a “winter camping flashback” of a mob of roos seemingly hopping on water as they make their way along a submerged sand bank at Habitat Noosa camping ground.

“The best morning wake up,” they posted.

We’re not arguing.

Katy Perry’s game try at AFL

US pop star Katy Perry practiced more than her performance when she went to the MCG this week.

Perry, who will provide the half-time entertainment at Saturday’s AFL grand final Sydney and Brisbane, tried her hand at Aussie Rules.

Dressed in glittery show gear, the singer took a mark before less successfully trying a handball.

While it’s unlikely her footy skills will turn the heads of fans, her performance is keenly anticipated, and at least she gave it a go.

‘Poocano’ explodes

These Chinese motorists got a lot more than they expected when they were treated to an extremely unpleasant shower.

Pedestrians and cars were left soaked in human excrement on Tuesday when a sewer pipe erupted near a motorway in Guangxi, China.

This stomach-turning footage shows the moment the vile waste showered the road.

The ‘poocano’, which blew more than 10 metres into the air, was reportedly the result of a pressure-test mishap as sewer pipes were being laid.

Terrifying dog-napping

A celebrity pet had a close call when Neena the long-haired English dachshund was snatched by a wild coyote from the backyard of former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee.

Security footage posted on social media by Lee’s wife and comedian, Brittany Furlan, shows the couple’s dogs outside a pool when the coyote runs up and snatches Neena in its jaws.

Furlan can be seen giving chase as the coyote attempts to make an escape over the back wall.

She was able to climb the wall and rescue the dog.

“Neena is safe,” she posted. “I climbed up the wall and grabbed her out of its mouth. Thank God she’s a little bit fat because he couldn’t make it over the wall with her.”

Hey Pesto!

If you haven’t heard of Pesto, you have obviously been avoiding social media for the past couple of weeks.

The impressively hefty Australian king penguin chick is winning the hearts of fans around the world for his sheer size and fluffiness.

Regular videos posted from his home at Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium are snapped up by viewers around the word – whether he’s feeding his already impressive frame, predicting the AFL grand-final winner, or just taking a nap.

Pesto’s fame has already gone far and wide, but he got another boost on Monday with singer Katy Perry sharing a Sea Life video featuring him with aquarium staff dancing to her hit Lifetimes.

Spanish Armada vibes

More than four centuries after the ill-fated Spanish Armada failed in its attempt to invade England, Londoners were met with an unusual sight this week.

Plenty of heads were turned on Thursday when The Andalucia – a meticulous replica of a 17th century Spanish galleon – sailed up the River Thames.

In an initiative of the Nao Victoria Foundation, the ship, a floating museum, is travelling the world acting as an “ambassador for Andalusia”.

The ship will remain in the British capital until October 6, when it will conclude its tour that has included ports in France, the Netherlands and Germany.

Another one into the sea

Officials in North Carolina say erosion is to blame for yet another dramatic collapse of a once coveted beach house.

Video footage posted by the Chicamacomico Banks Fire and Rescue Department shows a house in Rodanthe, North Carolina, collapsing into the ocean last week.

It is the third home on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to collapse in September due to coastal erosion. The home was unoccupied and was scheduled for demolition to avoid a collapse.

Swimmers were warned to stay out of the water near the house as dangerous debris could still be present.

Happy trails

Online dashcam footage seldom fails to disappoint when it comes to the mayhem and downright weird driving on our roads.

One video that emerged this week has quickly become a social-media meme.

In it’s monthly compilation of footage, Dashcam Owners Australia featured this gem showing how even with a trailer attached, some drivers refuse to let a yellow light stop them getting to their destination.
