A police officer has been killed and another injured in a shooting incident Thursday night involving an “armed suspect” on a rural property near the South Australia-Victorian border.

The second officer suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and a third officer was uninjured.

The alleged male suspect was shot by police and sustained serious life-threatening injuries. He remains under police guard.

The tragic incident unfolded at Senior, a regional town near South Australia’s border with Victoria, about 270 kilometres south-east of Adelaide.

Officers were called to the address on Senior Road about 11.20pm on Thursday to investigate an earlier incident.

“Attending police were confronted by an armed suspect and a shooting incident has occurred,” South Australia Police said early on Friday.

“One of the responding police officers sustained fatal gunshot wounds and despite the efforts of his colleagues and paramedics sadly died at the scene.

“A second police officer received non-life threatening gunshot wounds and has been transported to Adelaide for treatment.

“A third police officer at the scene was not physically injured and rendered assistance.

“The alleged suspect was also shot by police and sustained serious life threatening injuries.

“He was treated at the scene and has since been flown to Adelaide where he remains under police guard.”

Police said there was no further threat to the community.

Major crime detectives, forensics and internal investigation officers were at the Senior property on Friday morning. SA Police will give an update later in the day.
