Retro games, clothes and toys topped the list of big sellers on the Amazon 2018 Consumer Trends Report, released to mark the first birthday of the online giant’s Australian website.

Old-school, mini-gaming consoles from Nintendo sold faster than the Japanese electronics maker could stock them, and classic games like Mario and Zelda were back in vogue.

Items from the 1990s are all the rage, with shoppers snapping up logo T-shirt bargains, denim jackets and branded hoodies – even Casio’s classic black resin digital watch. Among the most popular brands were Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Levi’s.

Classic toys, such as LEGO and Monopoly, flew off the warehouse shelves. LEGO featured in Amazon’s top 10 best-selling brands for 2018 and was the best-selling toy on Black Friday.

Amazon Australia country manager Rocco Braeuniger said since its launch a year ago Amazon had grown its selection to almost 100 million products across 29 categories.

According to similarweb.com, the Amazon Australia website had 12.8 million visitors in the six months to October 18, up from 11.4 million in the previous six months.

Wellness, fashion and beauty was also a leading sales category. Major activewear brands included Puma, Lorna Jane and Calvin Klein and drink supplements with additional ingredients like vitamins and minerals – even green tea – proved popular.

The big winner in the health and beauty category was Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay, a facial cleanser made of bentonite clay from Death Valley, California, that is sun dried for up to six months in temperatures of up to 56 degrees.

And it was not just women who were snapping up health and beauty bargains.

Six of the top 10 best-selling beauty products were for men, including Dove Men+Care Shampoo, Nivea Men Sensitive Protective Moisturiser and Nivea Men Sensitive Face Wash.

Board games favourites – Monopoly, Connect 4, Operation (Star Wars version) and Hungry Hungry Hippos – made a big comeback. Traditional online purchases like books and music continued to do well.

When it came to the top-10 list of books bought, it’s clear consumers want to learn and improve their lives:
