Radio network Triple M has “parted ways” with leading host Marty Sheargold after his sexist rant about the Matildas soccer team.
Sheargold triggered outrage after comparing the Matildas to “Year 10 girls” and saying he “would rather hammer a nail through the head of [his] penis” than watch them play in next year’s Asian Cup.
Late on Wednesday, Southern Cross Austereo’s Dave Cameron said the station and Sheargold had “mutually agreed to part ways”.
“Southern Cross Austereo takes its responsibility to listeners, shareholders, and clients seriously and its programming should align with the standards and expectations of its audience,” he said.
“Right now, it’s clear this is a moment for reflection and review.
“Triple M acknowledges Marty’s contribution over the past four years, and we wish him well for the future.”
He said a new Drive show would be announced soon.
In the joint statement, Sheargold also said he had mutually agreed to leave the Triple M Network.
“I fully understand the gravity of my comments. I’d like to sincerely apologise to the Matildas and the broader organisation,” he said.
“I would also like to thank my immediate team for their hard work and apologise for the situation they now find themselves in.”
It has since emerged that Sheargold’s shocking on-air attack on Monday was followed with a second misogynistic rant on Tuesday, slamming the women’s health condition endometriosis.
In another shocking tirade, Sheargold said the painful uterine disorder — which affects one in seven women by the age of 49 — was “made up”.
He made the comments while talking about his own painful back problem.
“I’ve got a heat pack behind my back, which is very comforting and thank you to [executive producer Whitney Plowman] for bringing her period heat pack here because, God, don’t ladies carry on?” he said on air.
“Jesus Christ, there is no end of it. Honestly, endometriosis — and this is controversial …”
At this point a co-host cautioned “don’t do it”, but Sheargold continued.
“No, I’m going to say it. It’s controversial,” he said.
“[Endometriosis] is made up.”
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.
Wildlife advocate Bindi Irwin recently revealed she suffered for eight years with pain, fatigue and nausea before undergoing surgery for the condition.
Singer Sophie Monk is another who has the condition, revealing it had prevented her having children.
“So many women live not knowing they have endometriosis. If you have annoying cycles. You should ask your doctor,” she wrote in 2018.
Sheargold was on air with co-hosts Troy Ellis and Will Ralston on Monday when he made remarks about the Matildas during a news bulletin about their recent defeats.
“There’s something wrong with the Matildas. They had that wonderful tournament out here where we all fell in love with them, even though they didn’t make the quarters,” he said of the Matildas’ 2023 World Cup campaign, in which they made the semifinals.
“You know what they remind me of? Year 10 girls. All the infighting and all the friendship issues, ‘The coach hates me and I hate bloody training and Michelle’s being a bitch.’
“Now, I’m sorry to undermine the whole sport, but that’s what I think of it, so you can stick it up your a–e.”
Sheargold finished off with a question – “Got any men’s sport?”
The Fisk actor’s remarks sparked widespread condemnation and a swathe of complaints to Triple M.
He earned rebuke from Sports Minister Annika Wells, Matildas midfielder Clare Wheeler and the players’ union, Professional Footballers Australia.
