Musicians furious as watchdog warns AI is ‘stealing’ Aussie songs

They’re the classic Aussie hits that defined generations – from Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” to riffs from INXS and AC/DC – but music watchdog APRA AMCOS warns they’re now being scraped by artificial intelligence.
The organisation says AI systems are “hoovering up” songs without consent or payment, with data showing 126 Savage Garden tracks linked to Darren Hayes and 135 Cold Chisel songs fed into training tools.
Musicians including Julian Moss say the practice feels “like being robbed with a blindfold on,” while LA-based artist Gordi is calling for stronger protections and opt-out rights for creators.
APRA says any use requires licensing and payment, warning jobs across music, TV and advertising are at risk as the debate over AI and copyright intensifies.
