Actor Michelle Pfeiffer has revealed she has recently become a grandmother for the first time.
The notoriously private star dropped the announcement on the SmartLess podcast this week.
Pfeiffer (67), who is married to Big Little Lies producer David E. Kelley and has two children, Claudia (29) and John (27), revealed the big family moment while discussing her relationship with acting.
“I don’t have time nor the desire to go that deep for that long and not be present,” she said.
“I realise I have a finite amount of time left and — I might announce on this show — that I became a grandmother last year.”
Offered congratulations by her hosts, Pfeiffer said she had kept the development under wraps.
“I’ve been very quiet about it and it is … it’s heaven. It’s ridiculous. And if I had known that I was going to be a grandmother, I wouldn’t have taken on so much work, but I’ve enjoyed everything and I’m really grateful,” she said.
“I’ve loved — I love each of these projects. And so the weird thing is that giving up that angst about the process has freed me up and I feel in some ways has made me better.”
She offered no further details about her new grandchild, but said she still loved acting.
“I probably enjoy it more now than I ever have. I’m sort of more relaxed with it. I don’t really have time to be thinking about anything but the task at hand,” she said.
“But when I had all these acting jobs coming up, I thought, ‘OK, OK, how are you going to manage this and have a life?’. Because that hasn’t always been easy for me. I’m an all or nothing kind of girl. I always like taking on challenges and then I get into it and it sort of sink or swim.”
Pfeiffer adopted daughter Claudia in March 1993 and wed Kelly later the same year. A year later, their son John was born.
Though she initially kept working, Pfeiffer did step away from Hollywood for a few years to focus on her family.
“I was pretty careful about where I shot and how long I was away, whether or not it worked out with the kids’ schedule,” she told Interview in 2017.
“I got so picky that I was unhirable. And then … I don’t know, time just went on … I disappeared, yeah.”
But the Catwoman star is back in full force, with an upcoming role in the new Yellowstone spinoff series, titled The Madison, as well as a Christmas film called Oh. What. Fun. to be released in coming weeks.
“I’m an empty nester now,” she told Interview. “I’ve never lost my love for acting. I feel really at home on the movie set. I’m a more balanced person, honestly, when I’m working.”
Pfeiffer’s first leading role was in 1982’s now-cult classic Grease 2. A year later, she played Al Pacino’s spiky, cocaine-addicted wife, Elvira Hancock, in Scarface – the role that made her a star.
Oscar nominations followed for Dangerous Liaisons (1988), The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) and Love Field (1992).
