Nicole Kidman has won an Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts international supporting actress award in what could be an omen ahead of the Golden Globes.
Kidman won for her performance in Boy Erased and paid tribute to the film’s Australian director Joel Edgerton.
“He called me up and said, ‘Nicole, I know we’ve never worked together before but I have something for you,'” Kidman told the ceremony, nicknamed the Aussie Oscars, at the Mondrian Hotel’s Skybar in West Hollywood on Saturday (Friday local time).
Kidman is a dual threat this Hollywood awards season with Boy Erased and her stunning lead performance in Destroyer receiving nods at numerous awards shows.
Kidman is nominated for a Golden Globe on Sunday for Destroyer, although Lady Gaga, for A Star Is Born, is expected to win the best actress in a drama Globe.
The AACTA best actress award winner was a surprise, with Olivia Colman for The Favourite taking the award ahead of Kidman, Gaga and Glenn Close (The Wife).
The Mexican Netflix drama Roma was named AACTA best film.
Roma’s Alfonso Cuaron also took the directing trophy ahead of Australia’s Warwick Thornton for Sweet Country.
Hugh Jackman, for The Front Runner, missed out on the best actor prize to Rami Malek who played British rock legend Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.
