McDonald’s biggest drinks launch since McCafe debuted in 1993 is attracting attention for more than its colourful new beverages.

While customers have embraced the expanded range, paediatric nutritionist Mandy Sacher has raised concerns about its inclusion of Red Bull energy drinks, warning they could normalise high-caffeine drinks for children. She is calling on the Australian government to ban energy drink sales to anyone under the age of 16.

Sacher says the drinks’ bright colours and fruity flavours make them appear similar to soft drinks, despite their high caffeine content.

She argues children can easily mistake them for ordinary soft drinks, and has likened energy drinks to a “gateway” product that encourages unhealthy habits from a young age.

The calls come as the United Kingdom prepares to introduce laws banning the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to children.

UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting says parents and teachers have overwhelmingly supported the move, arguing the products contain excessive amounts of caffeine and contribute to childhood health concerns.

McDonald’s says its energy drinks are not part of Happy Meals and that advisory statements are displayed at the point of sale informing customers they are not recommended for children.

Under Australian food standards, energy drinks must also carry warning labels stating they are not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people sensitive to caffeine.
