Comedian, writer and actor Cal Wilson has died, aged 53, her agency says.

“We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the much-loved stand up comedian, writer and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends after a short illness at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney,” her management, Token Artists, said on Wednesday.

New Zealand-born Wilson was most recently co-host of Foxtel’s Great Australian Bake Off. It was in production when she was admitted to hospital.

She was also a stand-up comedian who appeared at the Melbourne Comedy Festival 14 times.

Wilson moved to Melbourne in 2003 to star in sketch show Skithouse. She had also appeared on TV favourites such as Spicks And Specks, Good News Week and Would I Lie To You? and starred in her own episode of Netflix stand-up comedy special, Comedians Of The World.

She was among the cast of Whose Line Is It Anyway? Australia and later overcame her “aversion to the great outdoors” to join I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022.

“Cal’s generosity, talent and friendship have been constants in the Australian comedy scene for the last 20 years,” Token Artists said.

“Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community.”

Wilson also had success with other artistic endeavours.

“In lockdown Cal made elaborate and ridiculous headdresses that she shared with her online community and a painting of Cal wearing a headdress made of doll parts and Christmas baubles featured in the 2023 Archibald Prize, taking out the Packing Room Prize,” Token Artists said.

Wilson was also the author of two children’s books: George And The Great Bum Stampede and George And The Great Brain Swappery.

Foxtel group general manager Wendy Moore said the network was devastated at news of Wilson’s death.

“We are all completely devastated to lose such an amazing, vibrant person. Cal joined our Bake Off cast last year and instantly brought her unique sparkle to the show,” she said.

“Her professionalism, work ethic and genuine heart-warming humour instantly made her a favourite amongst cast and crew, as well as the Australian audience.

“We will all miss her so much, and our hearts go out to her family and friends.”

There were also tributes from celebrities after Wednesday’s announcement.

“I can’t even comprehend this right now. The most divine, radiant person who I have watched, admired and worked alongside. This is heartbreaking. So much love to her husband, son and family. This is a very very sad day,” The Block judge Shaynna Blaze wrote.

Another comedian, Hollywood star, Rebel Wilson described Wilson as “amazingly talented and amazingly kind”, while TV presenter Grant Denyer said the news had left him “shaking”.

“How unbelievably sad. The most tender, kind, generous and talented performer I’ve ever had the pleasure to work alongside. This is devastating. Her poor family. Love you Cal… thanks for everything. You are very special,” he wrote.

Fellow NZ comedians Melanie Bracewell and Urzila Carson also paid tribute.

“A ray of sunshine,” The Cheap Seats’ co-host Bracewell wrote.

Wilson is survived by her husband Chris and son Digby.
