‘Pretty Pimpin’ by Kurt Vile

The artist: A former member of popular indie-rock band The War on Drugs, American singer-songwriter Kurt Vile has a very distinctive brand of easygoing cool.

• Song of the week: Damn Baby
• Song of the week: Panama City

Song of the week: Dreams
• Song of the week: True Detective‘s surprise hit

Pretty Pimpin is the first single off his forthcoming album b’lieve i’m goin down, which is out September 25 this year. With humorous lyrics and a melancholic guitar twang, it’s chill-out music with bite.

The vibe: A really talented musician waxes lyrical about his day-to-day life against an addictive country-esque backing track. Music that doesn’t try too hard.

Listen to it when: Relaxing by the fire (or electric heater) with a good book. Or if you want to prove to your friends that you’re hip and cool.

Sounds like: The War on Drugs, Wilco, Ryan Adams.
