One of Europe’s most popular ‘party’ destinations is planning a host of tough new measures – including the banning of bikinis on public streets – in a bod to clean up its image.
The municipal council of, on Portugal’s Algarve region, is proposing fines of up to €1500 ($2500) for holidaymakers coult wearing swimwear outside of beaches and hotel swimming pools.
The city has also proposed street drinking be banned with potential fines starting at €300 ($500).
Police would also be encouraged to crackdown public urination and public nudity by holidaymakers.
The draft code of behaviour, approved late last year, was published in the State newspaper Diário de República and will remain under public consultation for 30 days.
The crackdown comes after eight British tourists were identified by Portuguese police in Albufeira after they were filmed naked in broad daylight at a local bar.
The video of the group was shared on social media, showing several naked men in line, crawling on their knees, on top of a bar counter.

Local officials have expressed the aim of creating “better conditions for the development of the municipality, preserving Albufeira as a multicultural, family-friendly, and safe destination that values its heritage and identity”.
Albufeira mayor Jose Carlos Rolo said in an official government document: “It is urgent to establish measures that effectively address the adoption of abusive behaviours, particularly by those who seek the municipality of Albufeira as a tourist destination.”
Albufeira has recently tried to distance itself from its party image and move upmarket and away from its dependence on tourists.
Last year, the council presented a diversification strategy with the motto ‘Albufeira is part of your life’.
The Algarve crackdown follows similar – though perhaps less strict – measures adopted in other holiday destinations.

In 2023, the Bali Tourist Board adopted a widespread campaign urging tourists to “respect Balinese cultural customs”.
Incidents of foreign tourists flouting the laws of Indonesia have also resulted periodic crackdowns on the hire of scooters, the wearing of helmets and dress standards in some areas of Bali.
