Parents will no longer need to cram their baby’s bottles and nappies into their own bags when flying, with one airline moving to offer checked baggage for children under two.

A child under 23 months old travelling on Virgin Australian will soon get an allowance of 23 kilograms of checked baggage, two large infant items such as a pram or cot and a 7-kilogram carry-on bag for essential baby products – a first for an Australian airline.

Virgin ground operations general manager Paul Woosnam said the offer would be available on domestic and international flights.

“We know travelling with an infant can be incredibly stressful and we’re pleased to make that journey a little more effortless,” Mr Woosnam said.

“We’re proud to be the only carrier in Australia to recognise that travelling with an infant sometimes means packing far more than usual.

“We think parents will be pleased too, as they can now pack a little extra for themselves on their next trip.”
