Boom Time wins the 2017 Caulfield Cup

Long-shot Boom Time stunned the field and punters with a blistering run down the straight and a brilliant ride by jockey Cory Parish to win the $3 million Group One Caulfield Cup.

The galloper, who sprang from the barrier a 50-1 outsider, was the third victory in the classic for David Hayes, who shared training honours with son Ben and Tom Dabernig.

The six-year-old bay stallion came home ahead of Single Gaze in second, with favourite Johannes Vermeer running a disappointing third.

The win gives David Hayes his third Caulfield Cup triumph following Fraar in 1993 and Tawqeet in 2006.

The Robert Hickmott-trained Sir Isaac Newton was the early leader, setting a strong pace and getting out to a 10-length lead with 1,000m to go ahead of Amelie’s Star and Single Gaze.

As the field caught up, Single Gaze took the lead entering the straight from Humidor, with Boom Time between horses and a series of horses trying to make ground.

Johannes Vermeer was boxed in but came out late to grab third, but with Single Gaze leading near the 100m mark, Boom Time went back to the inside and hit the front late to win.

“To do it with my family is fantastic and to be the only owner, it is incredible,” David Hayes told Channel Seven after the race.

“I don’t own many horses, I own lots of little percentages. To do it is fantastic. For the boys and the team at Lindsay Park is fantastic. Especially a horse of mine.”

Jockey Cory Parish only found out he had the ride on Boom Time earlier in the week.

“(I’m) over the moon. You always wish for these things to happen but you never know they are going to. I have just done that today.

“David [Hayes] … he had the faith to put me on. I just said all I wanted to do was repay him at some stage and I have done that today.”
