Nathan Coulter-Nile wins Australia call-up

Injured fast bowler Mitchell Starc has been replaced in the Australian Test squad by uncapped quick Nathan Coulter-Nile, for the first five-day match against the West Indies in Hobart.

Victorian fast bowler Scott Boland has also been placed on standby in the squad, but otherwise the line-up is unchanged from the group that beat New Zealand in the day-night Test in Adelaide.

Coulter-Nile, 28, was part of Australia’s ODI squad in England this year, however he has not played a first class match for Western Australia since last summer.

Captains full of praise for day-night Tests

“With the exception of a forced change through the injury to Mitchell Starc we have decided to keep an unchanged squad following a successful series win against a strong New Zealand side,” selection panel chair Rod Marsh said.

“In an ideal world we would have liked Nathan Coulter-Nile to have played some more Sheffield Shield cricket but he has been a proven performer for Australia in short-format cricket and has very good pace.

“We think he is ready to compete at Test level if required.”

Marsh said Boland had been placed on standby just in case Australia’s bowlers did not fully recover from a heavy workload over the summer so far.

“Scott [Boland] presents as a good option if the situation with any of our fast-bowlers change,” he added.

“He’s bowling very well at the moment and is not far off selection.

“His seven-wicket haul against Western Australia showed just what he can do at an elite level.”
