Mitchell Starc not sure when he can bowl again

Mitch Starc has suffered a recurrence of the foot injury that kept him out of the game for six months in 2015-16.

Mitchell Starc is unsure when he will be fit enough to bowl, with Australia’s medical team to reassess his foot injury in three or four weeks.

Starc will play no part in Australia’s upcoming three-Test series against the West Indies.

The spearhead’s return to the national side is expected to come on next year’s tour of New Zealand, with the first Test starting on February 12 in Wellington.

However, Starc didn’t want to declare any timeframe for his return to full fitness from the stress fractures in his right foot.

“At the moment it’s just trying to let the bone heal for now,” Starc said in Adelaide on Monday.

“It depends on how it heals I guess.

“I’ll be in this (moon) boot for I think three or four weeks depending on how it’s going and probably reassess then.

“There’s no point putting a timestamp on it until the bone heals.”

Starc was also vague when asked whether the injury was related to his ongoing ankle issue.

“It’s probably something you can ask the medical staff,” he said.

“There’ll be a point where that will happen (surgery to fix the ankle injury).”

Starc is in career-best form and became the leader of Australia’s attack when Mitchell Johnson retired during the second Test.

The 25-year-old was trying to stay upbeat after the setback he suffered on day one of the day-night Test against NZ.

“Injuries are always disappointing but unfortunately that’s part and parcel of fast bowling,” Starc said.

“The ankle has probably been in an OK place – it hasn’t stopped me bowling or anything like that – and now the foot has popped up.

“It’s frustrating, but there’s not much I can do about it now.”
