Incoming US first lady Melania Trump says she is more than ready to disagree with husband Donald Trump as she prepares to return to the White House.

During a Fox and Friends interview Monday local time on the Murdoch-owned Fox News, Trump also revealed for the first time where they will live during her husband’s second presidency.

“Maybe some people, they see me as just the wife of the president,” she during the wide-ranging interview. “But I’m standing on my own two feet, independent.

“I have my own thoughts, I have my own yes and no. I don’t always agree what my husband is saying or doing, and that’s OK,” Trump added.

“I give him my advice. And sometimes he listens. Sometimes he doesn’t. And that’s OK.”

A week away from the January 20 inauguration and the Trumps’ return to the White House, Melania said she was “packed” and had chosen the furniture she wanted to bring to the executive mansion.

The second time had been easier, she said, because she knew the rooms where the family would live.

“I already packed. I already selected the, you know, the furniture that needs to go in. So it’s, it’s very different, a transition, this time, second time around,” she said.

Melania and Donald’s 18-year-old son Barron, who is studying at New York University, will have a room for when he visits.

Melania said she was still hiring for her team and planned to resurrect and expand her Be Best initiative, which was centred around childhood well-being, social media use and opioid abuse.

She revealed the program faced challenges during Trump’s first term as president.

“I didn’t have much support from anyone. I invited all of the streaming platforms to the White House. I had the roundtable, and I didn’t have much support from them,” Melania said.

“Imagine what we could do in those years if they will rally behind me and teach the children and protect them about social media and their mental health.”

Trump also said that an upcoming documentary on her life that will be distributed by Amazon Prime Video later this year was her idea, based on the reception to the memoir she released last year.

“I had an idea to, to make a movie, to make a film about my life,” she told co-host Ainsley Earhardt .

“My life is incredible. It’s incredibly busy. And, I told my agent, you know, I have this idea, so please, you know, go out and make a deal for me.”

She said the documentary would given Americans a “day-to-day” look at her move back to Washington DC.

The documentary is the latest connection between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and US president-elect Donald Trump.

In December, Amazon announced plans to donate $US1 million ($A1.6 million) to Trump’s inauguration fund, and said it would also stream his inauguration on January 20 on its Prime Video service, a separate in-kind donation worth another $US1 million.

Melania also revealed she didn’t always agree with her husband – and she wasn’t unhappy about that.

“Maybe some people, they see me as just the wife of the president,” she said.
