‘I heard you missed me’: Melania Trump jokes about absence

Melania Trump has used a speech in the White House Rose Garden to make a quip about her much-talked-about absence from public view over the past month.

“Good afternoon. I heard you missed me,” the US First Lady joked, as she took to the podium to announce an expansion of her Fostering the Future initiative.

There was a ripple of a laughter from the assembled guests, many of whom had no doubt read the “Where’s Melania?” headlines.

She then continued: “Here I am. Welcome to the White House…”

The occasion was the first time Melania has been seen in public with husband President Donald Trump at an official event since the July 19 FIFA World Cup final.

She has missed several high-profile recent occasions, including the funeral of Republican senator Lindsey Graham, and the second incarnation of the reimagined White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

Although the First Lady has reportedly been seen in public on just 38 days in 2026, a senior adviser told USA Today she was still working behind the scenes, adding:

“This First Lady is about results. She is not about optics.”

One of her projects is the Fostering the Future initiative, which provides scholarship opportunities for children transitioning out of foster care. At the Rose Garden event, she announced its national university network was being expanded thanks to a $2 million donation from IndyCar and Fox Corporation.

“The greatest achievement, investment, America can make is not in technology, infrastructure or capital markets – it’s our children… “ the First Lady said in her speech.

“Tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in classrooms today, including those growing up in foster care. Their capability is no less remarkable.”

It remains to be seen whether Melania’s appearance and speech will quell speculation about the reasons for her recent absence from public view, which has been contrasted with the near-constant presence of Trump’s 35-year-old assistant, Natalie Harp.

Harp – a former right-wing TV host and now “special assistant and executive assistant” to Trump – is frequently at his side.

The White House launched a withering attack on a respected journalist who asked a question earlier this week about comments made by a Democratic senator who mentioned Harp while criticising the President.

Meanwhile, late-night TV host Jimmy Fallon is among those who have commented on the First Lady’s absence.

“She hasn’t been seen in public for 29 days,” he said on Monday (US time), reading from news reports.

“Trump heard and was like, ‘Big deal. I haven’t seen her in private for two years’.”
