Trump promises $US5000 to every US citizen

US President Donald Trump has made the extraordinary declaration that every adult citizen will receive US$5000 ($6926) if the Republicans win the midterm elections in November.
Trump was rallying his base on the opening night of the first ever Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday night (local time), an event dubbed “Trump-a-palooza”.
He said the payment would be a “Trump dividend”, although it was not clear where the money would come from and whether it was legal.
AP calculated that the promise could potentially cost at least $US1 trillion ($1.39 trillion). US national debt has surpassed $US40 trillion ($55 trillion).
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them…I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $US5,000 ($6926),” Trump stated.
“But the only condition on the payment of this dividend that we’re going to be making… is that it must be spent in the United States of America.
”We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money. We don’t want you going to China, to Germany.
“We got to spend the money in the United States of America.”
He stated: “So if the Republicans win, you win with us … it will be called the Trump dividend.”
Americans will vote in November on all seats in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate. Republicans currently control the Senate and have a slim majority in the House of Representatives.
The ABC reports that Democrats need a net gain of three seats in the House and four seats in the Senate to seize control of both chambers of Congress.
Trump also defended the war in Iran and warned about what he claimed would happen if Democrats gained control of Congress.
“If we hand America’s future to the radical-left Democrats, our nation will spend the next decade just getting back on its feet,” Trump said.
“Vote Republican and we will leave the world in our dust for generations to come.”
Trump urged his audience to pretend he was personally running in the elections.
Earlier, Trump flew to Dallas on the Air Force One plane given by Qatar after an emergency slide was accidentally deployed.
Military personnel accidentally triggered the slide, a person briefed on the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.
The slide was activated shortly before Trump was due to board for a flight to Dallas. The issue briefly delayed Trump’s departure.
Asked by a journalist whether he was sure that the plane was safe to fly, Trump said: “Yeah, I am, or I wouldn’t be on it.”
The emergency slide was seen being taken away.
The Boeing 747-8 typically has 12 emergency inflatable evacuation slides. The slides are designed to allow passengers to reach the ground safely from a height of about nine metres.
The Air Force did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump started flying aboard the jumbo jet on July 1 after accepting the plane as a gift in 2025. There was an accelerated effort to renovate the 747 before Trump started using it.
The president said last week the 747 would be taken out of service in October for unspecified security upgrades that would take about 60 days.
