A pyrotechnic drone display has come to an explosive end in the city of Liuyang, in southern China, where fireballs were seen falling from the sky and sent flying into crowds.

Drones are becoming increasingly popular in fireworks shows and 10News+ has looked at how quickly the technology is evolving.

The world’s first “unmanned aerial vehicles” were used as weapons of war in the early 1900s. Now, in the 21st century, they are almost a part of daily life.

In 2013, the first consumer drone took flight, used for filming and photography. They’re also used by farmers to monitor crops, by emergency crews to save lives, and retail companies to deliver packages.

Perhaps the most spectacular showcase of drone technology is when they’re used to launch fireworks in perfect formations. Ten months ago, “pyro drones” made their Australian debut for the Sydney New Year’s Eve celebrations.
