Region on cyclone watch after heavy rain, flooding

Severe weather update

A string of cyclones may form off the Australian coast in days, but experts are not alarmed.

Two tropical lows off Queensland’s far north coast are a chance of developing into cyclones from Thursday, bringing more heavy rain and potentially “life-threatening” flooding.

Another two lows may also develop off Western Australia in the coming days. They are also a chance of forming cyclones.

Despite the forecast, experts said it was business as usual for Australia’s cyclone season.

The Bureau of Meteorology said a couple of cyclones occurring simultaneously across Australia was not unusual at this time of year.

“It’s not that uncommon. We do see two [cyclones] in the Australian region at the same time,” the bureau’s Jonathan How said.

Queenslanders are yet to see a cyclone since back-to-back systems struck in a month in the 2023-24 season, with Jasper and then Kirrily causing widespread flooding.

However, the far north is on cyclone watch this week with tropical lows in the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Coral Sea near Cairns.

More rain and possible flooding is expected up to the weekend, with the Coral Sea system a chance of becoming a cyclone as early as Thursday.

The low in the gulf is a moderate chance of developing into a cyclone on Sunday.

“Regardless of whether these systems do [develop into cyclones] this low-pressure system [in the Coral Sea] has the potential to dump an enormous amount of rainfall,” the bureau’s Sarah Scully said.

There was more than 300 millimetres of rain near Cairns on Wednesday morning, with people rescued from floodwaters and many roads closed, including parts of major arterial the Bruce Highway.

Thunderstorms will continue on Thursday morning from Cooktown down the coast to Mackay and inland towards Atherton.

The Coral Sea low was expected to move towards the coast ahead of the weekend, with the potential for heavy rainfall developing from Cairns down to Mackay.

“During Sunday, there’s even the chance for locally intense rainfall and that may lead to life-threatening flash flooding,” Scully said.

Another tropical low in the Coral Sea is forecast to develop near Vanuatu and form a cyclone by the weekend. It is unlikely to affect the Australian coast.

A low that could develop north of WA’s Kimberley coast by the weekend is a low risk of developing into a tropical cyclone from Saturday.

Another low may form north-west of WA later in the week and pass south of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

“There is a low chance of it developing into a tropical cyclone from Saturday,” the weather bureau said.
