Grave flood warning for millions of Australians

The weather bureau has warned residents along Australia’s east coast to brace for severe storms and another round of flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a spree of flood warnings for parts of NSW, Victoria and Queensland on Wednesday.

The bureau said that some areas could expect more than 100 millimetres of rain in coming days.

“A series of cold fronts will bring cool, wet and windy conditions to southeast Australia for the rest of the week. Thunderstorms for inland areas may produce heavy rainfalls,” it warned on Twitter.

Central NSW is expected to be the worst-affected area, with 70 millimetres of rain expected to hit the central-west sloped and plains and Riverina region on Wednesday.

The warning area covers a region stretching from south-west of Dubbo through Parkes to Young and out to Narranderra.

“Most of the rain is forecast for Wednesday, and peak rain totals are likely to be comparable to those experienced during last week’s rain, although the precise locations may vary,” BOM said in a statement.

“For the coast, there is a higher degree of uncertainty regarding rain amounts, with Thursday and Friday being the main days of interest and dependent on the movement of the low.

It said on Wednesday afternoon that the trough responsible for the rainfall would move east on Thursday and likely extend along the NSW coast.

The BOM said there was also a chance of severe thunderstorms and damaging winds developing in Queensland’s east and southeast on Thursday, and a chance of heavy rainfall for the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast.

Many catchments across NSW were already flooded after weeks of rain, the BOM warned earlier.

Major flooding is possible along the Namoi, Macquarie and Lachlan Rivers. It was already occurring at Wee Waa, Warren Weir and Euabalong on Tuesday afternoon.

People in Gunnedah, in north-west NSW, have already been hit with their third flood in a year. The State Emergency Service said water inundated five houses on the weekend when the Namoi River peaked at just over eight metres.

The SES has warned residents at risk of flooding to prepare and plan, with the ground already saturated.

On Wednesday, the agency was moving resources and equipment to areas of concern, including in the central-west and further north in the New England region.

There were three more requests for flood rescues overnight on Monday, on top of 30 over the weekend.

“With more weather coming from Wednesday, we are concerned and are reminding the community to make sensible smart decisions when travelling at the moment,” an SES spokesperson said.

The NSW SES carried out a flood rescue overnight in Boggabri, near Narrabri, after a 22-year-old man’s vehicle became submerged in floodwater.

Emergency services were initially unable to rescue the man, due to water levels around his vehicle.

The SES was later able to reach the vehicle by boat and pluck the man to safety from the roof of his car. He was uninjured.
