An after-hours break-in to a zoo’s crocodile enclosure has been slammed as a “reckless and completely unacceptable act” which could have easily ended in tragedy.

Two boys, aged 16 and 17, allegedly broke into Perth Zoo about 7:15pm on Sunday evening, WA Police said.

They then allegedly cut the locks to a saltwater crocodile enclosure before going in and hitting one of the animals with a metal pole.

Police said they were captured on CCTV inside the enclosure before the pair allegedly pulled the cameras from the wall.

The incident was reported to police the following morning.

In a statement posted to social media, Perth Zoo said their crocodile Dangalabba had sustained minor injuries in the attack.

“He’s being closely monitored by our veterinary and animal care teams but we’re relieved to say he’s well and behaving like his normal self,” the statement said.

“We know many of you have a special connection with Dangalabba and care deeply about his wellbeing, and we want to reassure you that he is okay.”

Both boys were arrested on Monday, with each being charged with criminal damage, trespass and animal cruelty.

Dangalabba is a 4.5-metre male saltwater crocodile who weighs around 400kg, according to the zoo’s website.

“While we are relieved that his injuries are not serious, this was a reckless and completely unacceptable act that caused harm to an animal and could very easily have resulted in tragic consequences,” the zoo said.

“The care and wellbeing of our animals is so important to us and we’re extremely disappointed this happened.

“These habitats are not places for trespassing or stunts.

“The actions of those involved showed a complete disregard for animal welfare, personal safety, and the dedicated teams who care for our animals every day.”

The pair faced a children’s court on Tuesday.
