Kyle and Jackie O’s radio expansion dealt another blow

Kyle and Jackie O moved into the Melbourne radio market in April.
Radio stars Kyle Sandilands and “Jackie O” Henderson have been dealt another ratings blow in their quest to dominate the airwaves in Melbourne.
In the latest GFK radio survey released this week, the duo’s show – which launched in Melbourne in April – failed to make traction with local listeners.
The program remained on 5.9 per cent of audience share — the same as the previous survey, which was the pair’s first in Melbourne.
They were seventh overall in the Victorian capital’s hotly contested breakfast market.
Meanwhile, Jason Hawkins and Lauren Phillips, who were dumped by KIIS FM to make way for the Sydney pair, climbed to second place in the breakfast FM slot.
The Jase and Lauren show on rival Nova further expanded its share to become the second most popular breakfast program behind Gold FM’s Christian O’Connell.
Hawkins and Phillips, who started in March, gained 0.9 per cent to overtake The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick on 9.5.
Chief content officer for ARN Media (which owns KIIS FM), Duncan Campbell, said it would take a “few more” surveys before Sandilands and Henderson’s presence would start to “resonate with the Melbourne audience”.
“But we’re excited to build on this foundation and are confident that Kyle and Jackie O will continue to capture the hearts of Melbourne listeners just as they have in Sydney,” he told News Corp.
Sandilands had boldly predicted their show would be No.1 in Melbourne by the end of the year.
The Kyle & Jackie O Show is being broadcast to Melbourne, as well as Sydney (where the pair have been dominant for years), as part of Sandilands and Henderson’s $200 million 10-year deal signed last year.
That deal runs until December 2034. It includes a base salary, shares, sign-on and ratings bonuses and revenue share,
Under it, the pair are each earning a reported $10 million a year – doubling their previous salaries.
