A 21-year-old man has been charged with the alleged murder of his ex-girlfriend whose body was discovered in a burning car in bushland in regional Victoria.

Lachie Young, from Sebastopol, was charged on Monday afternoon with the alleged murder of Hannah McGuire, 23.

Her remains were found inside a burnt-out vehicle on Friday morning at Scarsdale, about 25 kilometres south of Ballarat, after reports of a car on fire.

The alleged murder comes a month after Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, was charged over the death of Ballarat mum Samantha Murphy, whose body is yet to be found.

Murphy went missing during a morning run in Canadian State Forest on February 4, triggering triggered a huge search that turned into a murder hunt.

Jason Wood, the MP for the eastern Melbourne seat of La Trobe, said McGuire’s case was allegedly “yet another cowardly murder of another woman”.

“Lachie Young, the ex-partner of Hannah McGuire has been arrested and charged with the alleged murder of Hannah, her body was found in a burnt-out car, near Ballarat on Friday,” Wood wrote on Facebook on Monday night.

“I cannot comment on this case as it’s now before courts but it’s so sad.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.”

The Herald Sun reports that Young allegedly posted a tribute to his ex-girlfriend online, and sent a message to her friends intimating McGuire had killed herself.

“I will forever love you. Until we meet again, make that sky pretty, beautiful girl,” said Young’s post on Facebook.

The text message to friends reportedly read: “The police came and seen me Friday lunchtime and told me she had done it and wasn’t with us anymore. This is my fault.”

McGuire’s parents Glenn and Debbie, who run the National Hotel in Clunes, announced the local pub would close for a few days.

“Thank you everyone for your love, support and kind words. Our hearts are broken,” they wrote on Facebook.

“You weren’t just a star to us. You were our whole damn sky.’ Miss you Princess!”

A GoFundMe page set up by the Clunes Cricket Club in support of the family had raised $42,000 by Tuesday morning.

“Hannah was known by many as a bright young woman and had a heart of gold,” the club said.

The cricket club described McGuire’s parents as club sponsors and “very generous people”.

“All proceeds will go towards funeral costs and other expenses the family may need during this tough time.

“We understand the family had to close business, so any extra funds raised will help support the family while they take the time they need to get back up and running.”

A 22-year-old man who was also arrested on Sunday was later released.

Young is expected to appear in Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

There were more tributes on Facebook for McGuire in response to the devastating news of her death.

“Hannah has looked after my son at Dash everyday for the last year and he idolised her,” wrote Kat Orchard.

“There was never a time I saw her when she didn’t have a smile on her face. I can’t believe this has happened to such a beautiful soul. My family will be mourning with you. Sending love and strength at this extremely difficult time.”

Sharyn Simpson wrote: “Deepest condolences to you all, such a beautiful soul and a wonderful friend, she will be deeply missed.”
