Police say a 63-year-old woman was living in the same house as two decomposing bodies for weeks before they were discovered.

The remains of two elderly men were uncovered in the dilapidated terrace in Surry Hills, inner city Sydney, on Thursday.

The men, aged in their 70s and 80s, are believed to have died in the house at different times within the past month.

Police found the body of one man inside the property first and officers established a crime scene.

A short time later, the body of a second man was located in another room.

The identities of the men are yet to be confirmed.

Police made the grim find while responding to reports of a concern for welfare at the run-down house on busy Cleveland Street.

The woman living at the property has been named in media as Eleanor Barker.

No arrests have been made and police reportedly do not suspect the housemate of involvement in the deaths.

Detectives said they had spoken to the 63-year-old woman, who was also the landlord.

The Guardian reports she has owned and lived at property since the 1980s, and rented it out to the two men for at least a decade.

Neighbours reportedly saw her regularly riding her motorised scooter up and down the street and drinking beers at the nearby Crown hotel, reported the outlet .

One neighbour told The Guardian it had been three weeks since he had seen the men, but he said he saw Barker most days.

“The older guy would hang out on the front step and drink beers,” he said.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Surry Hills Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
