Former broadcaster Alan Jones has been arrested over indecent assault allegations.
NSW Police confirmed the arrest of an 83-year-old man in Sydney on Monday morning.
“Child abuse squad detectives have arrested a man following an investigation into alleged indecent assault and sexual touching offences spanning two decades,” the force said.
“Following extensive inquiries, about 7.45am today (Monday, November 18), strike force detectives executed a search warrant at a unit in Circular Quay where they arrested an 83-year-old man.”
The Sydney Morning Herald has named the man as Jones.
It follows an investigation by the Nine newspapers into allegations Jones indecently assaulted several young men throughout his career.
The papers said the veteran talkback host, who dominated Australian radio talkback for decades with his 2GB show, was accused of using his position of power to prey on several young men.
The allegations included behaviour towards a former 2GB employee, a waiter, an aspiring musician and a young businessman.
Jones, who is also a former Wallabies coach, vehemently denied the allegations through his lawyers, Mark O’Brien Legal.
“Our client denies ever having indecently assaulted the persons referred to in your letter, and your suggestion that he has is scandalous, grossly offensive and seriously defamatory of him,” they said in a letter to the papers.
They also said he had taken the “first step” to launching defamation proceedings.
On Monday, police said they had established Strike Force Bonnefin in March 2024 to investigate alleged indecent assaults and sexual touching incidents between 2001 and 2019.
Police were still executing their search warrant on Monday morning.
They are expected to give more details later on Monday. Ahead of that, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the investigation had been long and protracted.
“I did visit the strike force some weeks and months ago to look at the work they have been doing. It is very complex and protracted and I know that those officers have been working tirelessly to lead to today’s operation,” she said.
“There’s no such thing as a matter that’s too old to be investigated.”
