He was pulled over on December 30 at Fairy Meadow in Wollongong and has been disqualified from driving until the end of June.
On Friday Emergency Services Minister David Elliott said he was disappointed in the Commissioner, but said he retained his confidence.
But today the Minister said Mr Dent had tendered his resignation.
“Since being appointed as Commissioner in 2014, Mr Dent has provided excellent service to the people of NSW and the SES,” he said.
“However, yesterday morning I discussed this conviction and other driving matters with Mr Dent, which led to my decision, regretfully, to accept his resignation.”
Deputy Commissioner Greg Newton will serve as acting commissioner while recruitment for the role goes ahead.
