Queensland prison riot puts inmates and guard in hospital
Several prisoners and one corrections officer have been hospitalised following a riot in a Queensland jail.
The Department of Corrections says that about 4.50pm on Saturday, a small number of prisoners began breaking windows and being non-compliant in a block of the Maryborough Correction Centre.
A fire was started, which was extinguished by the prison’s sprinkler system, while prisoners also accessed a medication tray.
One corrections officer was transported to hospital after being overcome by smoke.
After control had been re-established in the prison, several prisoners had to be transported to hospital after showing signs of smoke inhalation or drug ingestion.
