Pauline Hanson’s daughter has revealed she will run as a One Nation Senate candidate at the upcoming federal election, but has emphasised: “I am not my mother.”
Mum and HR executive Lee Hanson announced her candidacy alongside her “polarising” mother on Channel Seven’s Sunrise on Thursday morning.
She hopes to win One Nation’s first Senate spot in Tasmania, which has six Senate seats up for re-election this year.
Labor and the Liberals hold two each and the other two are held by the Jacqui Lambie Network and the Greens.
Lee Hanson said she was motivated by the opportunity to speak up for others and make a difference.
“If you had have asked me 10 years ago if I would be standing here right now I would say, absolutely not , no way,” she said.
“Seeing what she’s been through as a child, witnessing your parent go through the turmoil, ups and downs, why would you want to put yourself through that?
“However, I’m a mum myself now, so I’m at a point where I feel I have to stand up, I need to stand up, I care too much about my children’s future, so it’s time to make a change.
“I have the experience, and here I am, I’ll give it a go.”
Lee has worked in human resources and recently had roles at the University of Tasmania and Hydro Tasmania.
Lee said she was “lucky” to have been raised by a mother figure who had taught her strong values.
Hanson has been a firebrand on the political landscape since bursting onto the scene in 1996.
“People find her polarising, and absolutely she is, my mother is polarising,” Lee said.
“I’m not my mother. I’m very different.
“She’s taught me the values of honesty, integrity, to stand up and give a voice to those people who don’t feel they have a voice, and that’s what I offer.”
Lee said she shared some of her mother’s values, but also had a different perspective on issues from a younger point of view.
“I test her thinking and provide a different context from the next generation,” she said.
“She is very different to me and I have some of the same values and strengths that I am grateful for that she’s taught me, but I’m my own woman.”
The One Nation leader said her daughter had much experience in leadership and much to offer.
Hanson said from her own experience, politics was a “tough job”, but the country needed individuals to hold the government to account.
“Unless we have people prepared to speak up and call it out for what it is and hold these politicians to account, nothing will change,” she sai.
“The country is in one hell of a mess, cost of living, people living on the streets, homeless, this all comes down to government policies and the path they have led the country.”
Pauline said she and her daughter were “great friends” and didn’t argue about politics.
One Nation has two federal Senators — Pauline Hanson and Malcolm Roberts.
Roberts is up for re-election while Hanson has her seat until 2028.
One Nation has no seats in the House of Representatives.
