Goldstein MP Zoe Daniel has won a partial recount in her bid to hold the seat won by Liberal Tim Wilson by just 260 votes.

The Australian Electoral Commission said on Monday it would begin a partial recount in the bayside Melbourne seat on Wednesday.

It follows a bid by Daniel for a full recount in the knife-edge seat – even though Wilson’s final lead was above the 100 votes that would trigger an automatic recount.

“The direction to conduct a partial recount has been made on the basis of advice … that in order to ensure the greatest level of confidence in the final result and the utmost integrity in the counting process, there should be a re-examination of all first-preference ballot papers for Tim Wilson and Zoe Daniel, as well as all informal votes,” the AEC said

“The recount request submitted by independent candidate Zoe Daniel was carefully considered and was instructive but not determinative, and her request for a full recount has not been granted.”

The partial recount follows a hard-fought campaign in the previously safe Liberal seat.

Daniel, who toppled Wilson in 2022, sought the recount because of the “very tight margin and several errors”.

She claimed victory on election night, and is yet to formally concede, despite the AEC declaring a final margin.

Daniel has argued “several errors” had been identified in the distribution of preferences on Goldstein.

“There are also several outstanding questions regarding the broader count, which would be resolved by a recount,” she said at the weekend.

Wilson, one of the few Liberals to gain a seat at the May 3 election, said on X on Monday that he looked forward to the recount.

‘‘We have been very relaxed about every count and recount to date in Goldstein, as we know the count will deliver the result that reflects the will of the people of Goldstein,’’ he said.

He has previously criticised Daniel for refusing to concede.

“Integrity is more than a slogan. When we don’t respect the result, we eat into the equity of trust in our electoral system,” Wilson said on Sunday.

“I have lived political grief. I have empathy for how hard it is. But one of the best things I did after the 2022 election was get to ‘acceptance’ quickly in the interests of the voters, my volunteers, and myself.”

The Goldstein recount is likely to take several days to finalise.

Meanwhile, the AEC is undertaking a full recount of votes for the NSW seat of Bradfield between independent Nicolette Boele and Liberal Gisele Kapterian.

While Boele was declared a provisional winner in the Sydney electorate last week, Kapterian eventually won it by just eight votes when counting was complete.

The full recount could take up to two weeks, Nine reported.
