Former prime minister Scott Morrison will lift the lid on how his Christian faith influences him, in a memoir to be published in May 2024.
The book, Plans for Your Good – A Prime Minister’s Testimony of God’s Faithfulness, will be published by Thomas Nelson, a division of HarperCollins Christian Publishing.
Details about the book first emerged last May, when Morrison declared his “royalties advance” from the publisher on his MP interest register. No further details, including how much he has been paid, were provided.
Monday’s announcement of more details came a day after the former PM was billed as “our special guest preacher” for a sermon to celebrate the 50th birthday of Perth’s Encounter City Church.
According to reports in the Nine newspapers, he used the pulpit on Sunday to make a surprise pitch for Wanneroo mayor Linda Aitken’s re-election, telling churchgoers that “new church buildings need building and development approvals”.
He also offered a somewhat bizarre rewriting of the 2022 federal election, describing it as “when he stepped down as prime minister”.
“Let us be careful as we go forward not to turn the past into some sort of idyll,” he said.
On Monday, the Thomas Nelson website revealed that Morrison’s upcoming 288-page memoir “offers a unique insider’s account of a Christian who was open about his faith and operated at the top level of politics for more than a decade”.
“During one of the toughest periods since the Second World War, covering drought, wildfires, a global pandemic and recession, he chronicles God’s faithfulness throughout, win or lose, public criticism or public success.
“Less political memoir and more pastoral encouragement, Morrison is passionate about encouraging others to discover how they can access and see the many blessings of God in their own lives, no matter their circumstances, drawing on Jeremiah 29:11, that God’s plans are for our good and not our harm, to give us a future and a hope.”
In the book, the former Liberal leader, who remains in parliament as a backbencher, sets out a series of questions such as “Who am I?” and “How should I live?”.
“Morrison’s honest, vulnerable and reflective answers offers a unique lens to better understand your relationship with God and the blessing that can flow from such a relationship,” the blurb states.
Morrison was Australia’s first Pentecostal prime minister. He famously declared the Coalition’s unexpected 2019 election win as a “miracle”, but went on to lose government at the 2022 poll.
