Melbourne man Hadi Nazari has been found alive after almost two weeks missing in the bush.

The 23-year-old was found in the Kosciuszko National Park about 3.15pm on Wednesday, following a 13-day multi-agency search involving more than 300 people.

He was winched from where he was found to the search base, where he was being assessed by paramedics on Wednesday afternoon.

“This is an incredible outcome; after 13 long days he has been located. We want to thank our emergency services partner agencies, volunteers and members of the public for their assistance. We never gave up hope of finding him, and we are elated we can return him safely to his family,” Riverina Police District Inspector Josh Broadfoot said.

The 23-year-old was reported missing on Boxing Day by two friends after he failed to arrive at the Geehi campground on the Hannels Spur Trail, Geehi, between Khancoban and Thredbo, where they had arranged to meet.

When he failed to arrive his two friends, aged 23 and 24, began to search for him.

Police were alerted later that day, and the search began.

Police said on Tuesday that Nazari’s camera, camera case and a campfire area had been discovered on Sunday. It was the first sign of Nazari since rubbish and hiking poles were discovered on New Year’s Eve.

“We’re very hopeful (he’s still alive) and we’ll continue the search until we’re very comfortable that we’ve done everything that we possibly can,” Superintendent Andrew Spliet said on Tuesday.

The poles were found about four kilometres from Geehi campground along a creek. But the camera and other items were found some distance away, over a mountain spur, Spliet said.

The hundreds of people involved in the almost two-week search for Nazari included Goulburn Police Rescue and officers attached to Riverina Police District, assisted by National Parks and Wildlife Service, SES, RFS, NSW Ambulance, VRA and PolAir.
