The mystery Melbourne winner of a $50 million share in a Powerball jackpot has been found.
The man, who is in his 20s, will share the mammoth $100 prize pool in Thursday’s draw with a Queensland couple – who were already celebrating their win on Friday.
The Lott officials revealed the Victorian winner, from Preston in Melbourne’s inner-north, spent a restless night on Thursday after checking his ticket straight after Thursday’s draw.
“It feels unreal. It’s unbelievable,” he said.
“I’m speechless right now. I can’t wrap my head around it.
“I’m hoping to have a good sleep tonight seeing as I barely got any last night after checking my ticket.
“It was impossible to sleep once I realised that I’d won $50 million.”
The man won his $50 million haul with his first Powerball ticket.
“I’ve played a few other lottery games in the past but never Powerball,” he said.
“When I saw the jackpot had reached $100 million, I thought I may as well buy a ticket.
“I woke up this morning feeling like nothing is going to hold me back anymore. It really feels like I could do whatever I want, like the world is my oyster.”
He had not registered his ticket, but contacted The Lott first-thing on Friday.
Asked about his plans for his newfound wealth, the man said he would keep working – and he would also help his parents retire immediately.
“I love what I do at work, so I will absolutely keep working,” he said.
“I want to make sure I keep my feet on the ground.
“I plan to share a lot of the prize with my parents and give back to them however I can. I’d love to retire them straight away.”
He joins a Rockhampton couple as the two winning ticket-holders in Thursday’s draw.
An official from The Lott surprised the winning Queensland grandparents with their life-changing news immediately after the draw last night. The new millionaire grandmother could not believe her luck.
“You’re joking,” she told the official.
“I’m in disbelief. I can’t believe it. This doesn’t happen to us.
“I expected you to ask if we have solar panels, not to tell us we’ve just won $50 million.
“We’re multimillionaires. I can’t believe I’m saying that. It’s going to take a while to wrap my head around it.”
The couple planned to share their multimillion-dollar prize with family.
“We’ll have lots more time together now too. I don’t think they’re going to believe us when we tell them,” the Rockhampton woman said.
“There’s going to be a few more prezzies under the tree on Christmas Day.”
The winning numbers were 22, 10, 4, 31, 1, 26 and 9. The Powerball number was 14.
In addition to the two division one winning entries, there were 3,080,963 prizes worth more than $62.5 million in divisions two to nine. This included 11 division two winners who each took home $158,200.15.
